‘Stuyvesant Changed the Trajectory of My Life’: Medical Doctor Says Only Three Black Students Admitted Is ‘Heartbreaking’

Physician, author and content creator Dr. Uché Blackstock is raising concerns about educational equity after learning that only three Black students were admitted to Stuyvesant High School‘s incoming class this year.

For Blackstock, the statistic is more than a number. It is a reflection of what she believes are years of unequal educational opportunities that begin long before students ever sit for New York City’s Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT).

“As a Stuyvesant High School graduate, this headline honestly broke my heart,” she said in a video shared on Instagram.

Blackstock, who graduated from Stuyvesant in 1995, recalled that Black students were still underrepresented during her time at the school, but said they nevertheless had a visible presence and community.
