A 30-year-old man was shot to death near Canarsie Pier in Brooklyn, struck in the head and chest before he was rushed to a hospital where he later died. No arrests had been made, and the victim’s name had not been released.
The shooting happened near the pier just off the Belt Parkway, according to New York Daily News. Medics took the victim to Brookdale University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute at the scene, though the exact origin of that dispute has not been detailed publicly.
Canarsie Pier itself sits on federal land, managed by the National Park Service as part of the Jamaica Bay Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area, with U.S. Park Police sharing enforcement duties there. The surrounding blocks and the adjacent Bay View Houses complex, however, fall under the jurisdiction of the NYPD’s 69th Precinct, which covers Canarsie’s residential and commercial corridors. It remains an open question whether the dispute that led to this shooting began on the federal park grounds or on the surrounding city streets.
