A major Staten Island sanitation investment will modernize essential city services while freeing a North Shore site for affordable housing, a grocery store and new public space.
NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani opened the $230 million Fresh Kills Sanitation Complex on Tuesday, August 18, a project that does more than give sanitation workers a modern workplace. It also clears the way for 232 affordable homes on Staten Island’s North Shore. The combination of infrastructure and housing shows how New York City can use public land and major capital projects to address more than one community need at a time.
The new Department of Sanitation complex sits on 13.55 acres at 1000 West Service Road in Fresh Kills. It consolidates operations serving Staten Island Community Districts 1 and 3 and supports trash collection, street cleaning, snow removal and other round-the-clock sanitation services…
