Newark man convicted of firing gun at man, chasing him down city street

A Newark man has been convicted of firing a gun at another man and chasing him down a city street in 2024, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

A jury convicted 53-year-old Shamsuddin Lockett on Aug. 14 of aggravated assault and weapons offenses. Prosecutors said the jury also found him to be a persistent offender, which could increase his sentence.

Prosecutors said Lockett was pacing on Elizabeth Avenue on the morning of Feb. 23, 2024, apparently waiting for someone. Around 7:10 a.m., a man approached from East Alpine Street, Lockett pulled a handgun from his pocket and fired one shot at him…
