This Former Jail Site in Paterson, New Jersey, is Set for a Major Transformation

A downtown Paterson block that spent generations behind walls is preparing for another major transformation. Passaic County plans a six-story government complex on the former county jail property. The development will include an attached parking garage and bring several county departments together. The main construction contract was awarded in July 2026.

Plans place the Board of Social Services, County Clerk, election offices, Sheriff’s operations, and Probation Department inside. Jail use on the block reaches into the 19th century, long before the familiar mid-century facility rose. That jail later expanded into a much larger complex before county correctional operations shifted elsewhere…
