Jersey City officials seek answers after ‘very sweet’ dog found on NJ Transit train

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (PIX11) — Think your morning commute was ruff? Ask this little pup.

“It’s not at all uncommon to find dogs without an owner,” said Paul Bellan-Boyer, Jersey City’s health officer. “We don’t find them on trains that often.”

Meet Obi, a dog that somehow wound up on an NJ Transit train to Hoboken Thursday morning during rush hour. Obi was found without a collar or microchip but seems well taken care of. Officials at the Jersey City Shelter say he is a younger dog who loves to play.

“The dog seems to be healthy and happy,” said Bellan-Boyer. “It does seem to have some hearing issues. It may be deaf, we haven’t fully evaluated that, but he seems to be very sweet, obviously likes people and I’m sure he’s going to be happy wherever he winds up.”

According to New Jersey Transit Police, the dog boarded a train at Mountain Station in South Orange, following a commuter who was unrelated to him. They said the dog stayed on the train to that commuter’s destination — Hoboken Terminal — a ride that typically takes about a half-hour.
