1 dead, 5 injured in shooting at New York City subway station: police

NEW YORK ( WPIX ) – One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at a New York City subway station during the evening commute on Monday, authorities said.

The shooter was still at large after opening fire around 4:35 p.m., according to police. The shooting happened at the Mount Eden Avenue station in the Bronx.

A 34-year-old man was killed in the shooting, police said at a Monday evening press conference.

A 14-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy, a 28-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man were injured, according to authorities. A fire department spokesperson told the Associated Press that four of the injuries were serious.

The incident started as a fight on a train and then continued on the platform, police sources told Nexstar’s WPIX .

“People started running off the train onto the platform, and more shots were fired while on the platform. That’s where our victims were shot,” said NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper.
