NYPD Harbor Unit ensures safety during Fourth of July fireworks

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — The countdown is on for the Fourth of July Macy’s fireworks .

While there is no credible threat to the big event, the NYPD is tasked with keeping more than 1 million spectators safe during the show.

The pressure is on and safety is the top priority while millions are expected to watch the Fourth of July celebration. The NYPD will be watching everything else from high above and on the water.

“Tonight is like our Super Bowl night on the water. We ask everyone to just be safe if you have a boat make sure you know your safety guidelines, adhere to the rules,” said Officer Mark Landi.

Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry said they are checking for any type of anomalies or any suspicious boats.

The department’s security plan is advanced technology, driven from the boats with radar detection themselves that can prevent any suspicious scenario with infrared technology.

“We can detect any hostile drones. If we don’t know who they are or where they belong, we will take your drone down,” said Daughtry.
