Empellón Owner Will Open Two New Spots Inside a Manhattan Hotel

Alex Stupak, the acclaimed chef and restaurant operator known for Empellón, its offshoots, and the short-lived Mischa restaurant, will have two new openings this fall. The Otter, a seafood restaurant, will debut on September 23, serving dishes like scallop crudo with chiles. Upstairs is the counterpart cocktail bar called Sloane’s. Both are located at 58 Thompson Street, at Broome Street, in Soho, stationed inside the new luxury hotel, the Manner, backed by the Standard Hotel group. According to WWD, “It seeks to be the more grown-up sister to The Standard’s properties; those who used to frequent the Boom Boom Room a decade ago atop The Standard, High Line, might find The Manner more their speed today.” The property was previously the Sixty Soho Hotel. At the hotel, check-in desks have been swapped for digital. “We’re trying to eliminate the forced hospitality interactions that happen,” a representative for Standard Hotels International told the publication. It’s the latest in a swing of hospitality openings moving toward the feeling of private clubs.
