Upstate murder suspect apprehended in New York City

The suspect charged in the brutal stabbing death of a woman in the Upstate, has been apprehended over 700 miles away from the scene of the crime.

As we previously reported, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office responded last week after a woman’s body was found by a family member on Edgemont Avenue in Greenville.

The Coroner’s Office identified the woman as Marie Hernandez, her body was found a few days after she had been stabbed to death. A search then ensued for her former boyfriend and murder suspect 38 year old, Alejandro Batista-Martinez.

Last Friday, Martinez was located and arrested by the FBI and the NYPD. He’s currently being held at the Rikers Island Facility in New York awaiting extradition back to the Upstate.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office says that arrests have now been made in 15 of 16 homicide cases they have investigated in 2024, thus far.
