Man captured on video kissing, then smashing a sacred statue in Brooklyn

Disturbing footage shows a man kissing a statue of St. Mary early Tuesday morning before picking up a brick and smashing it. The NYPD says the incident took place at Saint Therese of Lisieux Church on Oct. 22 at 4:30 a.m. The person did enough damage to force one of her fingers, the head of the snake and other pieces to fall off. But they were not done. The person then took it to a second statue and smashed off the crucifix. Longtime parishioner Yvonne Cheils says the statue is her “everything”. “She’s everything to me. I talk to her, I pray for her,” she says. Father Liju Augustine, of St. Therese of Lisieux, says the event makes him sad for his community. It is a statue that parishioners built nearly 100 years ago by themselves. Ironically, the statue has had repairs recently completed – a fresh coat of paint and some cleaning. Now, crews will have to come back for Round 2. ”
