The man accused in the shooting death of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in New York City.
Luigi Mangione faces 11 state charges, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism . That part was added by a Manhattan grand jury last week following his arrest in Pennsylvania and extradition to New York.
He also faces charges in Pennsylvania, and a federal case is running concurrently. And a conviction there could lead to the death penalty.
Thompson lived in Maple Grove, Minnesota, and on December 4 he was shot and killed in broad daylight in midtown Manhattan.
Mangione was at large for less than a week. He pleaded not guilty on Monday to murder and terror charges while his attorney complained that statements coming from New York’s mayor would make it tough for him to receive a fair trial.
Mangione, 26, was shackled and seated in a Manhattan court when he leaned over to a microphone to enter his plea. The Manhattan district attorney formally charged him last week with multiple counts of murder, including murder as an act of terrorism, in a state case that will run parallel to his federal prosecution .
