What began as a celebration of love turned into a tragedy no one could have imagined this week in Elizabeth. News broke on Wednesday, Jan. 1 that Naket “Naky” Trinidad was killed just one day after her boyfriend, Jose Melo, proposed to her at a local nightclub.

As of press time, officials had yet to release a statement. However, court records show that Melo, aka DJ Melo, had been charged on a warrant with murder out of Elizabeth, with an incident date of Dec. 30, 2024. In 2009, Melo was charged with kidnapping, simple assault, and aggravated sexual assault-robbery/kidnap/homicide/etc.
A video shared on Facebook captured the joyful moment Trinidad accepted Melo’s proposal at Bamboleo Night Club on Dec. 29. “I love you baby,” he captioned the clip.
Friends and loved ones flooded the post with congratulations and excitement, celebrating the couple’s future together. But within 24 hours, those messages of joy turned into condolences as news of Trinidad’s death spread.
