‘You killed my dad.’ Family of N.J. man shot by cops gets $1.2M settlement.

Riverdale has agreed to pay $1.2 million to the family of a man shot and killed by police in 2020 following a high-speed chase after they tried to arrest him for shoplifting.

Michael J. Rivera’s estate sued the Morris County borough for wrongful death, charging Officer Andrew Duffy used excessive force when he shot Rivera on a dead-end street in neighboring Bloomingdale, firing 14 rounds and emptying his gun.

The settlement, which was approved by a Superior Court judge last month, came three years after a grand jury cleared Duffy of criminal charges in the shooting. It marks one of several seven-figure settlements in the past year stemming from police-involved deaths in New Jersey…
