When a suspected car thief dove into the water to avoid capture earlier this month, New York City Police officers dove in after him and took him into custody.

The New York City Police Department on Sunday shared body-worn camera video from the Aug. 5 incident. Officers had responded to the area of East Rockaway Inlet, on the south shore of Long Island, after receiving reports that a car thief was in the area.

Video shows that when officers approached the suspect, he jumped over a sea wall and dove into the water. One officer dives in immediately while another calls for backup on the beach. A second officer then dove in to assist…
