N.J. man rescues 12-year-old girl caught in rip current at Jersey shore, but older sister couldn’t be saved

Thomas Walsh had just finished bodysurfing the waves in Belmar off 8th Avenue early Friday evening when two young women frantically ran up to him, saying “Where are the lifeguards? There’s somebody drowning!”

Walsh, a former Monmouth County corrections officer who has made several ocean rescues over the years, immediately ran back towards the water, where he joined about three other men searching for a young girl.

While chest deep in the water, a man pointed to a girl who was caught in a strong rip current near a jetty…
