NYPD steps up ‘Back the Blue’ recruitment drive after losing 14K cops in 5 years: ‘Rebuilding our ranks’

NYPD brass is stepping up efforts to fill the department’s depleted ranks with a new recruitment drive at this year’s annual “Back the Blue” ceremony, including an advertising blitz.

The Big Apple police department has been hemorrhaging cops in recent years, losing more than 14,000 rank and file officers since 2020, with nearly 3,500 more expected to flee this year — and just 8,000 applying to join this year compared to 18,000 in 2017, officials said.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tuesday that the department has begun turning it around, with a goal to hit 35,000 cops in uniform next year — but needs a bit of a boost to get back to full staffing.
