NYC Landlords to Receive Delayed Section 8 Payments as NYCHA Announces Distribution After Shutdown

Landlords in New York City awaiting overdue Section 8 payments can expect distributions to begin, according to the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). The delay occurred due to a pause in federal funding during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. NYCHA has received the required funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and anticipates that landlords will begin receiving payments soon, according to a report by Gothamist.

Section 8 payments, which depend on federal funding, were temporarily interrupted due to the government shutdown, resulting in nearly a month-long delay for tenants relying on the voucher program. NYCHA noted last Monday that payments were expected to be delayed, as reported by PIX11. After the 43-day shutdown ended, NYCHA required an additional week to finalize its financial arrangements.

“NYCHA’s Section 8 payments to landlords are contingent on federal funding, with the Authority serving as a pass-through for Housing Assistance Payments. It is NYCHA’s standard procedure to pay its Section 8 landlords as soon as is reasonably practicable following its receipt of funding from HUD,” NYCHA said in a statement obtained by Gothamist…
