New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani Announces $4 Million Investment to Increase Public Restroom Accessibility

Public restrooms in New York City are set to become more widely available. According to the City of New York, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has introduced an initiative to increase the number of public toilets, including a $4 million investment for the installation of modular public bathrooms. The program is intended to expand restroom access across the city. The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) will issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) within the first 100 days of Mayor Mamdani’s term, based on models from similar projects in cities such as Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

During a public address at 12th Avenue and St. Clair Place in West Harlem, Mayor Zohran Mamdani outlined the city’s plan to expand public restroom access. The first facility under this initiative is scheduled for construction at this location later this year. NYC Council Speaker Julie Menin was also present to provide the final approvals required from the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT).

NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn outlined the use of public restroom infrastructure by various groups, including seniors, parents with young children, delivery workers, and people with disabilities. New York City currently has nearly 1,000 public restrooms, with approximately 70% located in parks.
