June 1 Brings Deadline for NYC Trash Bin Requirement

Since late 2024, owners of residential buildings with one to nine units have been required to place garbage in lidded containers instead of loose trash bags. That rule began being enforced in January 2025, and sanitation tickets have already been issued across the city.

The next major deadline arrives on June 1, 2026. From that date on, those containers must be the official NYC-branded trash bins. Any other bin, even one with a lid, will no longer meet the requirement.

The rule applies to single-family homes, townhouses, and small apartment buildings with up to nine units. Commercial businesses were already required to containerize trash last year, while larger residential buildings are being transitioned into a separate system using large on-street containers known as Empire Bins…
