3 firefighters, 2 civilians taken to Staten Island hospitals after pair of devastating fires rip through homes

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Two destructive three-alarm blazes broke out overnight Friday into Saturday and sent five people to local hospitals.

The first fire broke out at 250 Elverton Ave., a dead-end street off Leverett Avenue in Great Kills, around 11:23 p.m., according to a spokesperson for the FDNY.

Flames tore through a 2.5 story private dwelling and strengthened to the point where a second alarm was declared at 11:42 p.m.
