Trash fines are back! Watch out for $100 tickets over how rubbish is separated

TRASH fines are officially back and residents could now face tickets of up to $100 for not separating their rubbish properly.

New York City’s Department of Sanitation rolled out a mandatory curbside organics collection scheme in 2024, forcing households to separate food scraps from regular trash in a bid to cut landfill waste.

The idea is to compost leftovers like fruit peels and food waste, reducing methane emissions — a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

While some of the collected waste is turned into compost for gardens and farms, a large portion is sent to processing plants where it is converted into energy to power homes and businesses…
