The Newark Police Division’s newest class expands the racial and ethnic diversity of a force that already reflects the city’s population, particularly its growing Hispanic community.
The latest graduating class of 45 rookies from the city’s William Mobile Ashby Community Care and Training Center includes 28 Hispanic, 11 Black, and six white officers, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety, which includes the Police Division.
Among the rookies sworn in Friday, nine are women and 36 are men, numbers consistent with an historical nationwide gender gap in law enforcement that research suggests is slowly narrowing…
