Mamdani marks start of Ramadan as new tradition starts in City Hall

More than half a million Muslims in New York City will observe Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam with the city’s first Muslim Mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

Nearly two billion practicing Muslims fast, without drinking water or food, from sunrise and sunset. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and observers break fasts with an evening meal known as iftar with family or other community members. The holy month is not just about fasting but is about spiritual growth, charity, reflection and self-control.
