WATCH: NYPD officers rescue injured bald eagle stranded in icy Hudson River

NEW YORK (WPIX) — A rare rescue unfolded on the Hudson River on Tuesday morning, when officers with the Harbor Unit of the New York City Police Department found an injured bald eagle stranded on a slab of ice.

Officer Mike Russo said he and three fellow officers were conducting a routine training exercise, checking ice flows as temperatures began to warm, when they spotted something unusual on the river.

“From a distance, it looked like something was on the ice,” Russo said. “We realized it was an American eagle.”

Instead of flying away, the injured bird called out, a sound Russo described as “a cry for help.” That’s when the officers jumped into action…
