Mamdani Proposes $70M NYC Grocery Plan Amid Deficit

New York City, NY — Mayor Zohran Mamdani is moving forward with a $70 million proposal to fund city-run grocery stores even as New York City faces a projected $5.4 billion budget deficit. The plan, first reported by the New York Post, would direct funding to the city’s Economic Development Corporation to identify sites and begin development of five municipally operated stores across the five boroughs.

Mamdani has largely blamed the deficit on policies inherited from former Mayor Eric Adams and has proposed either higher taxes on wealthy residents and corporations or a 9.5 percent property tax increase to close the gap. Gov. Kathy Hochul has expressed skepticism about raising taxes, while City Council leadership has signaled resistance to broad property tax hikes.

Supporters of the grocery plan argue it could improve access to affordable food in underserved neighborhoods.
