As Staten Island economy booms, housing costs and long commutes leave many behind, report shows

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island may span fewer than 14 miles, but the lived experience here varies widely — a reality reflected in a new report from the New York City comptroller.

Drawing on the most recent available data from 2017, the report offered a snapshot of how the borough is changing: Staten Island saw a 13% surge in employment from 2012 to 2017, reaching a record 97,000 jobs in a community of about 479,500 residents.

But for many, those gains are overshadowed by mounting traffic and increasingly unaffordable housing.
