N.J. will be killing deer in a place where many don’t ever see them

A state‑ordered deer cull is set to begin Monday in one of New Jersey’s most unlikely places: Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has ordered a week-long effort to “humanely cull a population of white-tailed deer” within a 200-acre section of the park long closed to the public due to lead and arsenic contamination, department spokesperson Larry Hajna said.

The effort to remove the deer is being driven by an upcoming cleanup of the fenced‑off site, which is intended to eventually reopen the area to the public…
