Small seiche crossed Lake Erie on Thursday

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A seiche formed on Lake Erie Thursday, lowering water levels in the Western Basin and then raising them near Buffalo.

The event, often compared to water sloshing back and forth in a bathtub, was created by sustained west-southwest winds of 25 to 45 miles per hour that began overnight and continued into Thursday, said National Weather Service meteorologist David Marsalek.

The seiche probably developed in the Western Basin around 2 a.m. and bottomed out between 8 a.m. and noon, he said, with water levels dropping roughly 20 to 22 inches…
