BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — An Irondequoit woman is facing federal charges after she was accused of “attempting to provide material support and resources” to a designated foreign terrorist organization, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said on Tuesday.
Catherine Beth Washburn, 37, is accused of making roughly 80 cryptocurrency transfers, totaling more than $30,000 to a person in Gaza identified as a Palestine Islamic Jihad fighter.
The federal complaint says Washburn is also the leader of the Direct Action Movement for Palestinian Liberation, which was formed following the October 2023 Hamas terror attack on Israel. If convicted, Washburn faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
