Criminal charges will not be filed in fatal crash involving off-duty deputy

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Criminal charges will not be filed against an off-duty Erie County Sheriff’s Office deputy involved in a fatal Buffalo crash earlier this year, the State Attorney General’s Office announced Thursday.

On Jan. 9, 2026, while pulling out of a parking lot on Elmwood Avenue, a deputy struck 62-year-old Carl Slone while he was crossing the street. The deputy got out of his car, called 911, and attempted to provide aid after the incident. Slone was pronounced dead in a local hospital shortly after midnight on Jan. 10.
