Buffalo Properties with Unpaid Tax Liens Are Headed to Foreclosure Auction

Buffalo homeowners who fell behind on property taxes, sewer rent, or user fees risk losing ownership of their properties entirely—not just facing a lien or a late fee.

Once the redemption deadline passes, a property owner’s interest in the property “will be extinguished,” according to the city’s In Rem foreclosure FAQ. The redemption deadline was August 28, and properties with unpaid 2023-or-prior tax liens, sewer rents, or user fees that weren’t redeemed by that date are now scheduled for public auction March 23–25, 2027.

To redeem a property, owners had to pay all delinquent amounts in full—including penalties, interest, and a $500 foreclosure fee. Signing a payment plan alone wasn’t enough; the full balance had to be paid by the deadline to stop the proceeding…
