Erie County DA John Flynn to join Buffalo law firm after stepping down

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Erie County District Attorney John Flynn is set to officially step down from his post on April 1 and join a Buffalo-based law firm, it was confirmed to News 4 on Wednesday.

Flynn will join the firm Lippes Mathias, located in Fountain Plaza in downtown Buffalo after he steps down.

Flynn told News 4 in November that he would not run for re-election and may step down before his term finishes, citing his belief in term limits and had made it clear through his tenure that he would only serve two terms in office.

Flynn has served as the District Attorney since January 2017. He handled the criminal prosecution of Payton Gendron, who killed 10 Black people and injured three more in the racist Tops supermarket mass shooting on May 14, 2022. Gendron pleaded guilty to 15 charges, including domestic terrorism motivated by hate, six months after the attack. The federal case against him is still pending, but he will spend the rest of his life in prison. Earlier this month, the Department of Justice revealed that it would seek the death penalty against Gendron.
