Local, state leaders oppose USPS proposal to move mail services to Rochester

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Local and state government leaders are opposing a recent proposal by the USPS to move processing operations from Buffalo to Rochester.

The United State Postal Service is conducting a Mail Processing Facility Review of the Buffalo Processing and Distribution Center located on William Street.

“The MPFR will assess how this facility can best support the Postal Service’s service and operational goals and provide a platform to launch new products and competitive services for mailing and shipping customers in the future,” according to a USPS document.

“There is no good reason why there should be any downsizing of services here on William Street,” said New York State Senator Tim Kennedy.

Both Congressman Brian Higgins and Kennedy said the downsizing of services could cause delays in mail services to the Western New York community.

Higgins said that the USPS does not have a financial problem due receiving $10 billion under the CARES Act during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The USPS does not have to pay the funding back.
