The Bridge Project: Payments for low-income mothers during pregnancy

The Bridge Project is a guaranteed income program in New York state that provides low-income mothers during pregnancy with recurring payments for 15 months. Launched in June 2021, the program offers no-strings-attached cash on a biweekly basis and has become a lifeline for expecting mothers. In addition to financial support, The Bridge Project also offers assistance in the form of connecting participants with doulas, as well as mental health and benefits counseling.

New Yorkers can apply for payments in three locations: New York City, Rochester, and Buffalo. However, it’s important to note that each city may have different payment amounts. For instance, mothers who qualify for the Buffalo program receive a one-time prenatal stipend of $1,125. Recipients will receive $750 per month for the first 15 months, and $375 per month for the remaining 21 months of the program.

To be eligible in the Rochester area, applicants must meet certain requirements, such as being 18 years or older, being 23 weeks pregnant or less with their first child, having an annual household income under $40,000, and living in the city of Rochester. Applicants in New York City must also fulfill similar requirements.
