BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Attorneys for social media companies are trying to get a lawsuit filed against them on behalf of families of Tops shooting victims dismissed.
The families are looking to hold social media giants accountable for the shooting.
Eventually, Judge Paula Feroleto will have to make a decision on whether to allow lawsuits against social media companies and gun manufacturers to continue.
Attorneys for the Tops victims’ families said in court that social media companies are hiding behind truth as they try to get this lawsuit dismissed. Those social media companies say in various areas of the law that they are not liable for what happened on May 14, 2022.
Attorneys for social media platforms Meta, Snapchat, Google, Discord and several others have filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit against them in connection to the Tops mass shooting. One of the claims made in court by 4chan, another online platform, is that the company does not operate in New York state, making the site not liable.
