BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The woman fatally shot by Hamburg police Friday after she broke into a home allegedly attacked officers with a penlight, which they believed was a knife, while she was being taken into custody, Hamburg Police Chief Peter Dienes said during a Tuesday briefing.
Lisa L. Haight, 36, was shot by an officer three times, once in the chest and twice in the legs, inside a home on McKinley Parkway after she broke into the home and “ransacked” the interior, according to Dienes. The name of the officer who shot Haight, a six-year veteran of the department, was not provided by Dienes to protect their well-being.
He confirmed that all three officers directly involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave amid an ongoing investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s Office, but that the measure is not “punitive” and they will return when they’re ready.
The officers involved were not wearing body cameras, meaning there is no video evidence of the shooting. Dienes said the department was allocated money for body cameras by the town board, and they are in the process of creating policies and procedures to ensure cameras will be worn by officers starting later this year.
