Smoot Filling Crucial Role in Bills Debut

The Buffalo Bills will look to stay undefeated when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night.

While the Bills will be facing multiple familiar faces on Jacksonville in wide receiver Gabe Davis and center Mitch Morse, Buffalo will have a former Jaguar on their side in defensive tackle Dawuane Smoot.

Not only will Smoot be making his Bills debut against his former team, but he will also be filling an important role for the defense, as he will call the unit on third downs.

Bills coach Sean McDermott spoke about Smoot stepping into the role in his first season with the team.

“Well it was a role that we needed,” McDermott said. “We’d been looking for it for some time, and being able to find the right person is hard because you have to have certain traits that go with that role, so we’re fortunate that we were able to find him and he has some of those traits.”

McDermott continued, discussing how the team has struggled to fill that role in recent seasons.

“I can’t say with great certainty right now who the last person was,” McDermott said. “One of the earlier people that you’ll remember was Kyle [Williams], right, to be able to do some things, call some fronts for us. I feel like we had maybe one or two in between there, but it’s nice when you can find that person.”
