Buffalo woman sentenced for not reporting $1.6M in embezzled funds

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo woman was sentenced to a year and a half in prison after she was convicted of filing a false tax return in connection with almost $1.6 million in embezzled funds that went unreported, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.

Officials said 62-year-old Maureen Holleran worked at an insurance company in Canada between 2015 and 2023 and for the tax years 2020 through 2022, she did not report $1,592,095 in embezzled funds.

Holleran worked remotely as a worker’s compensation claims handler and was responsible for evaluating claims and sending payments to claimants. She could send up to $2,000 without approval from her boss…
