Beloved Upstate NY bowling alley demolished after 133 years (photos)

Buffalo, N.Y. — A historic Buffalo building that served as a beloved bowling alley for generations has been razed.

Voelker’s Lanes, a building that stood at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Amherst Street for 133 years, was demolished this week. The vacant, crumbling structure was torn down to make way for a new apartment building and commercial space, WIVB reported.

“I really hope they save both of those beautiful neon signs,” wrote photographer Scott Balzer, who captured shared photos of the old structure’s final moments.

The Voelker family had the building built to serve as a hotel in 1892, according to Buffalo Business First. It transformed into a tavern before becoming a bowling alley in 1941…
