Driver apprehended by UPD, local law enforcement following four-and-a-half hour negotiation

Officers from University Police (UPD), Amherst Police and the New York State Police negotiated with a driver “in distress” for four and a half hours at the intersection of Chestnut Ridge and Sweet Home roads — just outside UB’s Flickinger Court apartments — Sunday night, university officials told The Spectrum.

The unnamed driver, with no UB affiliation, was pulled over by UPD due to vehicle and traffic violations. When officers approached the vehicle, the individual briefly exited the vehicle and pulled out a knife. He then immediately returned to his vehicle and threatened to harm himself, beginning a four-and-a-half hour long standoff.

Nearby roadways were temporarily blocked off as a precaution…
