Parishes suing diocese over payments get hearing

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) A judge overseeing the lawsuit filed by five parishes against the Buffalo Catholic Diocese over abuse settlement payments has issued an order preventing payment until a hearing next month.

Mary Pruski of Save Our Buffalo Churches says two sides were in judge’s chambers for about 30 minutes Friday afternoon before the hearing was scheduled to begin. “When the lawyers appeared that they said that they agreed that to the request that the diocese asked for an extended time to prepare their case, that the judge agreed that it would be proper to adjourn for now, but there is a restraining order in favor of these parishes not paying their assessment on July 15,” says Pruski.

A new hearing date of August 6 has been set, and then Pruski says a ruling will be rendered by the judge. “We’re just glad to have more time, and in the meantime, we will bolster and work on our cases also too. That way we can assure a win,” says Pruski…
