Former volunteer fire company treasurer admits to stealing nearly $450K

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A former treasurer for the Sheridan Park Volunteer Fire Company in Tonawanda admitted to stealing nearly $450,000 from the organization over a period of six years, the Erie County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

James Hoffman, 41, of Depew, stole a total of $446,118.42. He did so by making cash withdrawals from the fire company’s bank accounts and not depositing money from fundraiser proceeds between January 2019 and January 2025. The theft was uncovered after a vendor reported that a check for an unpaid invoice was rejected.

Authorities said that Hoffman used the stolen money to support his gambling habit. He was removed from his position earlier this year…
