Governor Hochul Allocates Over $9 Million to Fight Gun Violence in Western New York

In a move applauded by many local communities, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the allocation of over $9.1 million to bolster law enforcement efforts in Western New York, with the specific aim of combating gun violence. As reported by the Governor’s Office, these funds are a part of the state’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative, which has shown promising results with a 24 percent decrease in shooting incidents and a 35 percent downturn in the number of individuals shot for January through June, in comparison with the same timeframe the previous year.

“My top priority is public safety,” Governor Hochul stated, highlighting a strong commitment to seeking out a decline in gun violence through collaboration with local law enforcement bodies. Among the agencies to benefit from this funding, Erie County stands to receive the lion’s share, with over $6 million headed its way, and the Buffalo City Police Department is set for a $2.1 million injection, according to Governor Hochul’s commitment. Meanwhile, Niagara County isn’t far behind, with an allocation of approximately $2.2 million dedicated to its respective law enforcement departments. A stance echoed by New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James emphasized the efficacy of the GIVE initiative, pointing out the support provided by Governor Hochul has been crucial in equipping agencies with necessary tools and resources…
