Local woman running 360 miles from Buffalo to Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) The distance from Buffalo to Albany stretches 360 miles, and one local woman is taking it on foot. Samantha Slattery plans to leave on August 1st, and run from Buffalo to Albany in about 7 days.

Samantha Slattery is not an Olympic athlete. She’s a mom from Castleton-On-Hudson, who enjoys long-distance running. She will be running the 360 miles from Buffalo to Albany along the Erie Canal Trail. She plans to run in 30-mile blocks, but this journey is not one that she will take alone. Her husband Dennis will be driving and meeting her along the way with food, water, and supplies.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the completion of the Erie Canal, and Samatha felt like it was the perfect time to conquer this challenge.

Samantha told us that her kids are involved as well, making her run a family affair. “They’re very excited. We had a chain counting down the days. We’ve got kids books on the Erie Canal, we’ve got the song, so we’ve brought them along on the preparation journey with us.”

Samantha said that a lot of preparation goes into the run, from figuring out which stops to make to finding places to make camp, but there is also a degree of flexibility required. She said the most important thing is to be ready to adapt. “You really have to troubleshoot all the challenges that come up on your own on the fly, and it gives you a really unique perspective on the world.”…
