Amherst police increase patrols amid rising car thefts in town

AMHERST, NY — Amherst residents are warning their neighbors to stay alert as car thefts continue to spike across the town. Numbers obtained by 2 On Your Side show car thefts have nearly doubled in the last five years — up 92.5% since 2020.

In 2020, the town reported 147 stolen cars. In 2024, that number reached 283. So far in 2025, there have already been 144 incidents reported, putting the town on pace to match or exceed last year’s total. And in the last four weeks for which data is available, police say at least seven cars have been stolen each week.

Some of those thefts have been caught on camera. Videos shared with 2 On Your Side show masked and hooded individuals walking up driveways in the middle of the night, checking car doors, and in some cases driving off in stolen vehicles…
