New York under toxic air alert warning as skies coated with fine particles

Tiny particles are polluting the skies over New York, according to the National Weather Service, which urged residents to exercise caution when heading outside for activities.

An air quality alert from the government entity was issued at 5:52 p.m. on Sunday and is slated to remain in effect until midnight on Tuesday.

The alert impacts Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga, Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis, Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties – most of which are located upstate.
