Amherst sees surge in attempted car thefts; residents and officials call for action

AMHERST, NY — Videos circulating on social media are shedding light on a troubling trend in Amherst — attempted car break-ins are happening in broad daylight. In Facebook groups across the region, residents have posted surveillance footage of individuals trying, and sometimes succeeding, to steal cars from driveways in quiet neighborhoods.

While many of these attempts are unsuccessful, longtime Amherst resident Rick Schmitt says they’re happening far too often.

“It’s a midday problem,” Schmitt said. “Go on our Facebook page for our town — 12 o’clock noon, 2 o’clock in the afternoon, five o’clock in the evening — cars being stolen right out of your driveway. This is just a crazy, horrible, escalating problem.”
