Granville may have to use retirement ‘cash-outs’ to repay county taxpayers

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Last week’s guilty pleas by Erie County Sheriff’s Narcotics and Intelligence Chief D.J. Granville to reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident — and the $550 fine a judge is requiring him to pay — have not ended the controversy for Sheriff John Garcia.

As calls grow for State Attorney General Letitia James to open her own investigation, the county’s top fiscal watchdog says he is focused on recouping funds for taxpayers — and Granville may need to pay the county back if he chooses to retire.

Erie County Attorney Jeremy Toth said his office covered part of the $70,000 in damages because sheriff’s officials said Granville was on duty at the time of the crashes…
