State report: The need for senior care is increasing

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A new report from State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli finds that thousands of older New Yorkers remain on waitlists for in-home care, meals and other essential support, even as state funding for senior services has nearly doubled in recent years.

DiNapoli’s office said the findings raise questions about efficiency and transparency in how taxpayer dollars are being spent. He says waitlist numbers are not consistently reported by county, and some funding has gone unused.

The report found at least 16,000 seniors statewide were not served in the most recent year, even as state support for aging programs grew by 88% — a $114 million boost since 2018. The findings underscore the growing strain as New York’s 60-plus population is projected to reach 5.5 million by 2030…
